On the third attempt, South Korea became the second Asian country to receive the right to host the Winter Olympics. The bid lost in 2010 to Vancouver and in 2014 to Sochi. Before that, only Japan had hosted the Winter Olympics in Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998.

92 countries were represented at the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. Six countries participated in the Winter Olympics for the first time: the Republic of Kosovo, Malaysia, Nigeria, Singapore, Ecuador and Eritrea.

A record number of medals were awarded – 102. The Olympic program includes big air in snowboarding, mass start in speed skating, double-mix in curling and team competitions in alpine skiing. Parallel slalom in snowboarding is excluded.

The Suhoran mascot is a white tiger from Korean mythology, symbolizing trust, strength and protection. At Korea's first Olympic Games, in Seoul in summer 1988, the mascot was also a tiger, but an Amur tiger (Khodori).
