The 3rd Summer Youth Olympic Games were held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from October 6 to 18, and were a record-breaking event. 3,997 athletes representing 206 NOCs participated. 239 medal events were contested in 39 sports.

The Russian team won the unofficial team event at the Summer Youth Olympic Games for the first time. In Buenos Aires, young Olympians won 59 medals, including 29 gold, 18 silver, and 12 bronze. More than half of the Russian athletes—55 out of 94—returned home with medals.

Russian athletes from 20 sports won medals and medals at the Games. Sergei Chernyshev, the team's flag bearer at the closing ceremony, made history as the first YOG champion in breakdancing. Russia placed among the medalists in futsal and 3x3 basketball, which also made their debut at the Youth Olympic Games. Anna Chernysheva also won Russia's first Olympic karate medal.
