Intercalated Olympic Games (Non-Olympic)

Greece Greece
21 April – 1 May 1906

About the Games

  • In honor of the tenth anniversary of the first modern Olympic Games, the Intercalated Olympic Games were held for the first and only time. They took place at the request of Greece as an “inter-Olympiad.” The 1906 Games in Athens were not recognized by the IOC as official and did not receive an ordinal number.
  • By general consensus, the level of organization and format of the Games far exceeded all previous editions, and many formal procedures for bidding and conducting the Olympics were established. For example, entries for participation were, for the first time, required to be submitted through national Olympic committees
  • For the first time, the Opening of the Games was held as a separate ceremony, during which national teams from participating countries marched around the stadium with their national flag — a tradition that continues to this day.
