About the Games
All the facilities built in Lillehammer for the XVII Olympic Winter Games were so practical, comfortable, and well integrated with the natural environment that they received special praise from the IOC.
At the XVII Olympic Winter Games, for the first time, the mascots were human figures: a boy and a girl, Haakon and Kristin — brother and sister from Norwegian folklore.
Norwegian speed skater Johann Olav Koss won three gold medals, setting a world record in each event (1500 m, 5,000 m, and 10,000 m).
