V Olympic Winter Games 1948 in St. Moritz

Switzerland Switzerland
29 January – 7 February 1948

About the Games

All sports venues were equipped with products from Swiss watchmaking companies. A giant chronometer was installed at the Olympic stadium, which started automatically at the starter’s signal and stopped when the winner crossed the finish line.

For the only time in the history of the Winter Olympic Games, two teams shared first place in the unofficial medal standings — Norway and Sweden, whose athletes each won four gold, three silver, and three bronze medals.

The silver medal in ski jumping was won by Norwegian athlete Birger Ruud, a champion of the III and IV Olympic Winter Games, who by that time had survived severe injuries resulting from persecution by the Nazis and imprisonment in Germany for his anti-fascist views and actions.
