About games
The 3rd Winter Youth Olympic Games were held from January 9 to 22, 2020. Seventy-nine National Olympic Committees sent representatives to Switzerland. A total of 1,872 athletes aged 14-18 competed. A total of 640,000 sports fans participated in the 2020 Games, 355,000 of whom attended the competitions.
The competitions were held primarily in the canton of Vaud and St. Moritz, with some events taking place at venues located in France on the border with Switzerland. Eighty-one medal events were contested in 16 disciplines across eight sports. Several of these sports were making their debut at the multisport competition: 3x3 hockey, women's Nordic combined, ski mountaineering, big air (freestyle and snowboarding), and women's double luge.
The YOG in Lausanne was the most successful in the history of the Russian Olympic team. Our athletes won 29 medals – 10 gold, 11 silver, and 8 bronze (not counting the medals won as part of international teams). Of the 108 athletes who competed, 68 boys and girls from 15 regions of the country won medals and medals.
Russia took first place in the unofficial team standings. Switzerland finished second with 24 medals (10 medals, 6 medals, 8 medals). Japan finished third with 17 medals (9 medals, 7 medals, 1 medal).
Our young Olympians reached the podium in 11 of the 16 disciplines – cross-country skiing, biathlon, skeleton, luge, hockey, freestyle skiing (ski cross), snowboarding (ski-snowboard cross), curling, speed skating, ski jumping, and figure skating.
