About the Games

Speed skater Christa Rothenburger, who won the 1000 m race, went on just seven months later to win an Olympic silver medal in cycling, becoming the only woman to win Olympic medals in both Winter and Summer sports.

For the seventh consecutive time, Soviet figure skaters won the gold medals in pair skating.

For the first time, speed skating competitions were held in an indoor arena.
