IX Olympic Winter Games 1964 in Innsbruck

Austria Austria
28 January – 8 February 1964

About the Games

Special services had to move 15,000 cubic meters of snow to the luge, bobsleigh, and alpine skiing tracks.

After Australian alpine skier Ross Milne crashed into a tree at full speed, the organizers of the IX Olympic Winter Games had to pad trees with cushions and install nets in particularly dangerous areas.

All four gold medals awarded in women’s speed skating were won by Soviet athlete Lidia Skoblikova — she set three Olympic records at the IX Winter Games, a feat that no one had achieved before or since.
