About the Games
This was the last year the Winter Olympic Games were held in the same year as the Summer Olympic Games.
For the first time, women’s biathlon events were included in the program.
Following reunification, Germany was represented by a single team. At the XVI Olympic Winter Games, athletes from the former GDR and FRG won a total of 33 medals — 11 gold, 14 silver, and 8 bronze.
Athletes from the former Soviet republics competed as a unified team. They won 23 medals, including 9 gold.
