The Tokyo 2020 Games were the fourth in a row for Japan. They wanted to organize the Olympics for the first time in 1940, but the war broke out, so the Games could not be held. But the Olympics were held in 1964 in Tokyo. Then it was the first Games held in Asia. Japan has also hosted the Winter Games twice, in 1972 in Sapporo and in 1998 in Nagano.

The Commission decided that the Games will be held from July 24 to August 8, because it is then that Japan has the most favorable weather for the competition.

Traditionally, the host country develops symbols for each game that reflect its national characteristics. This time, the Olympic logo is a chess pattern, under which the inscription "Tokyo 2020" and 5 Olympic rings are located. This pattern was popular in Japan in the 17th-19th centuries when the Tokugawa clan ruled the country.
